The ferry terminal in Swinoeujscie, the only one in the country capable of handling rail ferries, has resumed operations in Poland. The terminal recently received a batch of wagons from the Swedish port of Ystad, which arrived on the ferry Polonia and were sent to the south of Poland for repairs.

Luka Koper: Successful first half of the year amid declining sea freight volumes.

Despite a slight decline in overall seaborne freight volumes at the beginning of 2024 due to the uncertain situation in the Middle East and slower economic growth, the Luka Koper Group’s first half-year report shows a successful result. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) amounted to EUR 37.3 million, 26% above the target of EUR 7.7 million, despite a slight decline in revenue of EUR 1.6 million. The main reasons for the success were the reduction in operating expenses due to lower costs for energy, materials and maintenance services.

The Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Kazakhstan spoke about the modernization of the ports of Aktau and Kuryk.

Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Railway and Water Transport of the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kasym Tlepov spoke about significant projects being implemented in the ports of Aktau and Kuryk. According to him, dredging work began in the port of Kuryk in July 2024, where a third of the planned volume has already been completed. The work is being carried out using the Visalius dredger, which is capable of effectively developing soil in difficult water conditions.

The ports of Liepaja and Ventspils will receive €6.8 million for environmental projects.

The ports of Liepaja and Ventspils will receive financial assistance from the European Cohesion Fund in the amount of 6.8 million euros, with the possibility of increasing the amount to 8.1 million euros. The funds will be used for projects related to improving the environmental safety of port infrastructure and reducing the negative impact of harbours on the urban environment and climate.

Cargo turnover at Polish ports has fallen amid a reduction in coal imports.

In the first half of 2024, the total cargo turnover of Polish seaports decreased by 8.7%, amounting to 67.75 million tons. The port of Szczecin-Świnoujście handled 15.9 million tons of cargo, which is 12% less than in the same period of 2023. The main decline is due to a sharp decrease in coal transshipment by 67%, to 618 thousand tons.

Poland is considering participation in the privatization of the Belgorod-Dnestrovsky port.

A Polish delegation visited the Belgorod-Dnistrovsky Commercial Sea Port, considering the possibility of participating in its privatization. The cargo turnover of the Port of Helsinki increased by 1.3% in the first half of 2024.

In January-July 2024, the Port of Helsinki increased its cargo turnover by 1.3% compared to the same period last year, reaching 8.2 million tons. The largest increase was demonstrated by the handling of packaged cargo, which rose by 6.9%, amounting to 7.2 million tons, while the handling of bulk cargo decreased by 21.9% to 605.6 thousand tons.
