DB Regio to renew S-Bahn fleet as part of 2029+ concept.

German regional passenger transport operator DB Regio has launched a tender for the supply of up to 400 new electric trains for the S-Bahn network in Stuttgart, Munich and the Rhine-Main region. This is part of the S-Bahn 2029+ program, which aims to modernize urban rail systems and standardize rolling stock.

Evergreen orders 11 container ships for $3.2 billion

Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Marine Corporation has signed contracts for the construction of 11 container ships with a capacity of 24,000 TEU each. The total value of the deal will be up to $3.2 billion. The new ships will be equipped with dual-fuel engines running on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

KTZ expands grain exports to Central Asia and China.

In January 2025, Akmola railway workers transported 696.7 thousand tons of cargo, of which 512.8 thousand tons were grain (7,478 cars). 94.1 thousand tons (1,408 cars) were sent to the domestic market, and 418.6 thousand tons (6,070 cars) were exported. The main delivery destinations were the countries of Central Asia, China and the port of Aktau.

Rijeka Gateway has received the last STS cranes, completing the terminal’s equipment.

The last two STS (ship-to-shore) cranes have arrived at the Rijeka Gateway container terminal. The new equipment is identical to the previously installed cranes: their height with the boom raised reaches 138 meters, and their weight is 1,700 tons. The delivery of these cranes completes the process of equipping the terminal with key equipment, including two rail cranes (RMG) and 15 terminal cranes (RTG), delivered last year. At present, the construction of the terminal is 75% complete, and the project is already having a significant economic impact on the region.

Kombiverkehr has completed a major restructuring of its transport operations.

Kombiverkehr KG has successfully completed the project to reorganize its traction services, which began in June 2024 due to the European Commission’s proceedings against Germany as the owner of DB Cargo. Over the course of six months, the operator has redistributed a significant part of its transport operations to other rail companies. As a result of the agreement with the new partners, container transport services have been expanded on key routes between Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy.

KTZ and Lianyungang Port discussed prospects for transport cooperation.

A meeting of the management of JSC NC KTZ and LLC GC Port Lianyungang was held in Beijing, where the results of joint work for 2024 were summed up and key areas of partnership for the future were identified. The participants paid special attention to the development of the Khorgos dry port and the Kazakh-Chinese terminal in Lianyungang, which are strategically important facilities for transit traffic between the countries.

China’s TIR market shows record growth in 2024

The implementation of the TIR international road transport system in China has led to rapid development of the sector, according to the International Road Transport Union (IRU). The number of operators and vehicles using TIR has increased by more than 400%, while the number of shipments to and from China has grown by 88%. Hauliers from eight countries have used more than 50 routes through 35 border crossings and inland logistics hubs.

DHL and Scania present electric truck with increased range.

DHL Group and Scania have developed a new electric truck with a fuel-powered generator, enabling the transition to electric transport without waiting for a full charging infrastructure. The new Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) will enable DHL to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 80% by using 80–90% renewable electricity. The truck is equipped with a generator that replaces one of the battery packs, reducing dependence on charging stations. DHL will begin test operations on the route between Berlin and Hamburg in February 2025.
