DB Cargo improved its financial performance despite a drop in cargo turnover.

The freight division of the German railway corporation Deutsche Bahn — DB Cargo — ended the first half of 2025 with an EBITDA operating profit of 70 million euros. For comparison: a year earlier this figure was negative — minus 53 million euros. The operating loss according to EBIT also decreased significantly — from 256 million to 96 million euros.

Financial progress was achieved against the backdrop of a decrease in business volumes: the company’s revenue decreased by 9%, freight turnover — by 16%, and loading volumes — by 11% compared to the same period in 2024.

The downward trend continues: if before the pandemic, from 2016 to mid-2019, the drop in freight turnover was 8.5%, and loading volumes — 12.7%, then over the past 2.5 years, these figures reached 31.1% and 27%, respectively.
