CargoBeamer to build largest semi-trailer handling terminal in Germany.

CargoBeamer, a specialist in semi-trailer rail transport and intermodal terminal operator, has announced the construction of a new, highly automated terminal in Kaldenkirchen, near the border between Germany and the Netherlands. It will be the company’s first own terminal in Germany, designed specifically for the automated loading of non-crane-mounted semi-trailers on rail. Construction will start in the second half of 2025, with commissioning scheduled for 2026.

The new terminal will be CargoBeamer’s largest facility and will be able to handle up to 228,000 units of cargo per year, significantly strengthening its combined transport capabilities in the Rhine-Ruhr and Benelux region. The project is being implemented in two stages: the first stage will see the development of 133,000 square meters with the installation of proprietary transhipment technology, the creation of 270 parking spaces and an automated check-in system. The financing will be provided by the German Federal Railway Agency together with the company’s investments.

According to CargoBeamer CEO Nicolas Albrecht, the opening of the terminal in Kaldenkirchen is a key step in the company’s strategy to transition to more environmentally friendly rail transport. After commissioning in 2026, a second expansion phase is planned, which will increase the facility’s area to 159,000 square meters.
