TCDD receives first Turkish-designed E5000 locomotives.

Turkish railway operator TCDD has received the first five E5000 electric locomotives, which were developed and manufactured entirely using local technologies. The handover ceremony took place in Eskisehir, where the locomotives are assembled by Türasaş with the participation of the TÜBİTAK RUTE Research and Development Institute.

The E5000 electric locomotive is certified according to European TSI standards, reaches speeds of up to 140 km/h and is equipped with a 5 MW engine, making it suitable for Turkey’s main trunk routes. The project is actively supported by the state: as noted by Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, 115 Turkish suppliers are involved in the production, providing key components – from transformers to bodies.

The contract provides for the delivery of 95 locomotives: another 15 units will be delivered by the end of 2025, 30 in 2026, and the remaining 45 in 2027. The E5000 project is seen as an important step towards Turkey’s technological independence and expansion of its export potential in the field of railway engineering.
