Greenbrier Europe has announced the closure of its plant in Arad, Romania, which has existed since 1854. The 150,000 m² facility, which has produced over 250,000 freight cars for 35 countries, will cease operations, affecting around 700 employees.
The decision was the result of an in-depth analysis of the European market and the optimization of production capacities. Production will be concentrated in Greenbrier’s two other Romanian plants, Caracal (225,000 m²) and Drobeta-Turnu Severin (93,000 m²). These plants will continue to provide products for European and international customers.
Greenbrier Europe, headquartered in Swidnica, Poland, was established in 2017 after acquiring 75% of AstraRail Industries for €60 million. Today the company unites factories in Romania, Poland and Turkey, is engaged in the design, production, maintenance of freight cars and provides leasing solutions.
