The Port of Rotterdam Authority has completed a major expansion of the pipeline corridor along the Moezelweg at Europoort, removing a key bottleneck to the energy transition. The existing infrastructure was previously unable to accommodate new cable and pipeline routes, so it was decided to upgrade it to meet current and future needs.

The first user of the new corridor will be the Porthos project, an initiative to transport and store CO₂ from Rotterdam’s industry in the depleted gas fields under the North Sea. To accommodate the Porthos pipelines, the ProRail railway line was relocated, retaining structures were installed, embankment excavation was carried out and two sheet pile walls were safely and vibration-free installed in a confined space by Van Halteren Infra.

The project was made possible through close cooperation with ProRail and demonstrates how the Port of Rotterdam is actively shaping the infrastructure for a sustainable energy future. The upgraded corridor is ready to accommodate not only the Porthos CO₂ pipeline, but also other pipelines that will be built in the future.
