Northwest Europe’s largest short-distance shipping operator CLdN has introduced a new service that will enable partners to comply with the FuelEU Maritime (FEUM) environmental requirements. This EU directive aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels. However, such measures lead to increased costs, as biofuels are 50-150% more expensive than traditional fuels. At the same time, there are fines for non-compliance with FEUM standards – for example, a Capesize vessel calling in Rotterdam from South America could incur costs of $50,000 if it does not use the required amount of biofuel.

To reduce financial risks, CLdN offers a “Pooling” mechanism that allows shipowners to combine the emissions performance of different vessels, compensating for the low results of some at the expense of the more environmentally friendly performance of others. This provides flexibility in compliance, reduces costs and stimulates investment in modern technologies. With a fleet of 30 vessels using biodiesel and bio-LNG, CLdN is ready to adapt the fuel mix to help partners meet EU standards.

CLdN’s fleet is already one of the greenest in the industry. In 2023, its average emissions were 39 g CO2/t-km, 19% better than its nearest competitor. The company is actively investing in the construction of new, more fuel-efficient vessels and the modernization of the existing fleet, which allows it to reduce fuel consumption and minimize its carbon footprint.
