The joint stand of the Port of Hamburg and Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai focused on the green transformation of supply chains. The Port of Hamburg’s presentation was held under the motto “Sustainability in the context of the energy transition”, reflecting the importance of international cooperation in creating more sustainable supplies. China remains the port’s largest market, with a container volume of more than 2 million TEU per year.

The Port of Hamburg, Germany’s largest multi-purpose port, is actively developing sustainable rail connections to the markets of Central and South-Eastern Europe and is developing into an international energy hub. This was a key issue at the 5th German Logistics Roundtable, organized as part of the fair.

“The strong interest from the participants shows that we are moving in the right direction with our focus on sustainability,” said Axel Mattern, Managing Director of Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM).

Hamburg’s strong links with Chinese ports are confirmed by the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between the Shanghai Municipal Transport Commission, the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and major Chinese companies to establish a “green” shipping corridor. This relationship has been developing since 2004, when the two ports signed a sister city agreement.
