DB Cargo has extended its contract with BASF for the transport of chemical products.

DB Cargo continues to successfully deliver chemical products for BASF, transporting between the company’s plants in Ludwigshafen and Schwarzheide. Two years ago, DB Cargo developed an innovative shuttle concept specifically for BASF, which combines flexibility and reliability. The contract was recently extended for another two years, underlining the success and demand for this logistics scheme.

The shuttle concept involves forming block trains at the BASF plant in Ludwigshafen, where the chemicals are loaded into special wagons. As the train travels to Schwarzheide, it makes a stop at the marshalling hub in Halle, where some of the wagons are uncoupled for BASF’s regional customers, while the bulk of the cargo continues on its way. This format eliminates unnecessary shunting work, which reduces transit times and increases delivery reliability.

Since the launch of the shuttle concept in 2022, BASF has transported 270,000 tons of chemical products annually. Since April 2024, the number of flights has increased to six per week, indicating the growing demand and the high efficiency of this logistics model.
