Rhenus has officially opened a sustainability-focused innovation center for steel processing at the Port of Dortmund. A symbolic ribbon was cut at the opening ceremony, which was attended by Oliver Krischer, Minister of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The new hub is intended to promote green steel distribution in the region. The steel will be transported from major seaports on low-emission inland waterway vessels to Dortmund, from where it will be transported to customers using environmentally friendly transport, including electric trucks and trains. The electric trucks and crane systems on site are powered by electricity generated by solar panels installed on the 7,200 square meter roof.
With this solution, Rhenus customers can significantly reduce the CO2 emissions in their supply chains. The integration of all delivery steps from a single source not only helps steel producers move towards sustainable production, but also increases the overall efficiency of the processes.
