By the end of 2026, Spanish rail operators Adif and Adif AV plan to invest €24.1 billion in infrastructure development. More than half of this amount, €12.1 billion, will be spent on modernizing traditional rail, suburban and freight lines. The main works concern the renewal of signaling, electrification and communication systems, as well as the reconstruction of logistics hubs in key transport areas such as Vicálvaro, Valladolid and Fuente de San Luis.
Half of the investment will be spent by the end of 2024. A significant part of the funds will be spent on modernizing approaches to the ports of Sagunto, Castellón and A Coruña, which will improve the efficiency of freight transport.
Separately, Adif AV is investing €12 billion in expanding the high-speed network, of which €7 billion will be spent by the end of 2024. Particular attention is being paid to the construction of new lines in Cantabria, the Basque Country, Navarre and Extremadura, as well as the reconstruction of key stations and the modernisation of the existing high-speed line Madrid-Seville.
