Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has launched a pioneering test field for hydrogen-powered port logistics at the Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) in the Port of Hamburg. This includes the inauguration of a hydrogen refuelling station, marking a significant step towards decarbonising port operations. Angela Titzrath, CEO of HHLA, along with other key officials, celebrated the launch by successfully refuelling a hydrogen-powered tractor unit. This new infrastructure supports the transition to emissions-free logistics by enabling various heavy goods vehicles and port equipment to be refuelled with green hydrogen.

HHLA, in collaboration with over 40 partner companies from the Clean Port & Logistics (CPL) cluster, has been working since 2022 to expedite the adoption of hydrogen-powered heavy goods vehicles. The test field at CTT serves as a practical site for testing and optimizing operational, safety, and maintenance protocols. Recent trials with equipment from Hyster-Yale, VWG Oldenburg, and CMB.TECH have demonstrated the viability of hydrogen in heavy goods logistics, reinforcing the cluster’s commitment to decarbonising their processes through climate-friendly investments.

Funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, with coordination by NOW GmbH and implementation by Project Management Jülich (PTJ), the CPL cluster and refuelling station have received approximately three million euros. This initiative is part of HHLA’s “Balanced Logistics” sustainability strategy, which aims for climate neutrality by 2040.
