The World Shipping Council (WSC) has published its 2024 report on containers lost at sea, revealing a significant drop to just 221 containers lost in 2023. This marks the lowest number since the survey’s inception in 2008. Despite this progress, the WSC emphasizes the necessity for ongoing stringent safety measures, as each lost container represents a substantial risk.
Key findings of the report include the notable reduction in losses, with only 221 containers lost out of 250 million transported, down from the previous record low of 661 containers in 2022. Additionally, about 33% of the lost containers were successfully recovered. The WSC stresses that these improvements should not lead to complacency, underscoring the continuous need for adherence to safety protocols.
Looking ahead, the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee has adopted new mandatory reporting requirements for containers lost at sea, set to take effect on January 1, 2026. This initiative aims to further enhance safety and minimize future losses.
