EAIL24: Moving Intermodal Together – our approach to support the Modalshift in Europe.

Marc Hunziker, Head of Asset and Sales Coordination, Intermodal Product and Business Development at VTG Rail Europe GmbH, noted that current discussions revolve around the critical environmental and logistics challenges facing the transport sector, highlighting the need for comprehensive solutions that go beyond just reducing CO2 emissions . Participants highlight the importance of the regulatory framework in Europe and the wider social impact on future generations, emphasizing that environmental responsibility goes beyond emissions control.

Beyond CO2, other factors such as road wear and microplastic pollution are considered equally pressing issues, with statistics showing serious health consequences, including links to lung cancer. Moreover, the looming driver shortage crisis across Europe, exacerbated by demographic shifts and geopolitical events such as the conflict in Ukraine, poses a major operational challenge for the industry. Despite these looming challenges, there is a feeling that many stakeholders in the market and industries have not yet fully grasped the severity and urgency of these looming challenges.

VTG operates in 21 countries, using its extensive experience to promote collaboration between stakeholders. They focus on creating new transport lines and innovative solutions through partnerships with influential organizations such as road transport companies and industries, as well as operators such as Baltic Rail, thereby shaping transport flows and infrastructure development.

“Our portfolio covers sea, container and tank transport, complemented by specialized wagons such as container ships and double-pocket trailer wagons. VTG is pioneering initiatives such as R2L, which facilitates the transfer of trailers from road to rail with electrified, temperature-controlled transport solutions, marking a significant leap in sustainable logistics,” said Marc Hunziker.

In addition to traditional operations, VTG acts as an advisory group bringing together railroads, terminals and shippers to raise awareness of rail’s potential. They advocate for rail transport as a viable alternative, organizing events across Europe to showcase their innovations and engage directly with stakeholders. With 25 R2L certified terminals already in operation, VTG aims to further expand and influence the transformation of European transport dynamics.

Although VTG initiates and conceptualizes intermodal lanes, they do not directly manage them. Instead, they work closely with operators and railway companies to effectively implement these innovations. Their approach focuses on creating sustainable transport solutions that meet European targets for reduced environmental impact and operational efficiency.

VTG advocates collaboration rather than competition in the logistics industry, citing successful partnerships such as its one with CFL in the trailer industry. They recognize the mutual benefits of combining diverse solutions to advance market progress, emphasizing the collaborative spirit needed to achieve common industry goals and promote sustainable growth.
