Antwerp Euroterminal (AET) is set to pioneer green maritime practices in Belgium by introducing the country’s first shore power connection for seagoing vessels. Scheduled for operation in 2026, this cutting-edge installation aligns with international ISO standards and signifies a significant step towards sustainable port operations. By enabling docked ships to tap into the local electricity grid, shore power minimizes emissions of CO2, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, and particulate matter, fostering improved air quality and reduced environmental noise in port areas.

AET’s commitment to environmental stewardship is underscored by its decision to install two fixed shore power connections specifically catering to car carriers and conro vessels, despite the absence of a European obligation for ro-ro and con-ro vessels until 2030. Spearheaded by HOPaS (High voltage Onshore Power As a Service), a consortium comprising Techelec, Yuso, and Whitewood, the initiative represents a collaborative effort towards sustainable maritime infrastructure. With a total capacity of 5MW, the project boasts a €25 to €30 million investment, partially subsidized by the Flemish agency for innovation (VLAIO).

The integration of renewable energy sources, including wind turbines and solar panels, underscores AET’s commitment to green energy production and storage. The installation not only meets present demands but is also future-proofed for potential expansions, catering to evolving maritime needs.
