MTTF24: Survey of the regional freight market. Core trends and challenges.

Paata Adamia, General Director of MSF, noted that the company began its development in 2010, and over 14 years of active operation it has become the leading multimodal carrier in the country. The main emphasis is on multimodality, which implies the company’s ability to handle a wide range of transport, including container, road and rail. While many companies in the region specialize in specific types of transport, MSF provides high-quality services in all areas.

Confirmation of the high level of professionalism is the company’s experience in chartering ships for more than 14 years. The company has offices in Poti, Tbilisi and Batumi, and aims to improve logistics processes, speed up the supply chain and support the development of small and medium-sized businesses. Despite challenges such as political tensions and the pandemic, MSF is committed to its strategy and remains on track to achieve its long-term goals.

“During our meeting, which is focused on the transportation of large cargo between the Black Sea and Caspian regions, I am proud to share one of the significant projects of our company. This is a jointly developed APM terminal in the port, which is known for its activities in the field of general cargo handling and cooperation with the Georgian railway. The project began in 2017 with the transportation of a 192-ton transformer, which presented a significant technical challenge.

This transformer weighed a total of 201 tons, and unloading it required significant effort and engineering as there was no rail transport available for such loads. In 2019, we were again faced with the transportation of this cargo, but in greater weight. Thanks to the joint efforts and professionalism of our teams, we successfully coped with this difficult task,” Paata Adamia spoke about the company’s experience.

In 2023, MSF became a member of the Georgian Business Association, which underlines its reliability and level of professionalism. This gave them access to a number of benefits, including strengthening ties between business and government.

In addition, an important announcement was the upcoming opening of our own warehouse in the city of Batumi at the end of 2024. Cargo handling statistics at the ports of Batumi and Poti indicate a steady increase in cargo turnover, especially in the field of container shipping, which emphasizes the growing importance of Georgia in global logistics.

“Georgia’s transit and logistics potential plays a key role in its economic development and integration in the world market. To maximize this potential, it is necessary to systematically develop transport and logistics infrastructure, as well as introduce new technologies, which will help create additional value for transit cargo and increase the competitiveness of Georgia as a key transit point,” shared Paata Adamia.

Joint efforts are important to increase the competitiveness of the Middle Transport Corridor, the support of which requires the trust of cargo owners and transport companies. The Georgian government is actively investing efforts in the development of this strategically important route, as evidenced by the achieved visa-free regime with China and the planned first transportation of vehicles from China to Georgia together with Chinese partners.

A competitive alternative transit route through the Southern Corridor from Central Asia via Iran is becoming increasingly active, offering an advantageous geographic location for freight traffic from China to Central Asia. While the Northern Corridor offers greater capacity and reduces transit time and costs, both routes face their own weaknesses, such as:

  • international sanctions,
  • instability of the situation,
  • severe winter weather conditions.

For transport corridors to operate effectively, it is critical to develop strategic partnerships and alliances between ports, railways, suppliers, logistics services and freight forwarders, reduce barriers to transport, implement a common tariff policy and improve the reliability of the transport corridor.
