Klaipėda Port has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first port in the Baltic States and one of only 35 ports across Europe to receive certification under the Port Environmental Review System (PERS). The announcement was made today during the European Sea Ports Organisation’s annual event in Paris, where Klaipėda Port was officially recognized as an environmentally friendly port.
The journey towards PERS certification began in 2023 with the establishment of environmental objectives, targets, and performance indicators, alongside a comprehensive assessment of legal compliance and the development of a performance improvement plan. These indicators will serve as benchmarks for measuring the port’s progress in reducing environmental impact and working towards climate neutrality over the next two years.
Certification documents were thoroughly reviewed by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA), affirming that Klaipėda Port’s environmental strategy aligns with PERS requirements. The strategy emphasizes the adoption of best management practices and cutting-edge technologies, with a focus on renewable energy sources and energy-efficient solutions, reflecting the port’s commitment to the principles of the circular economy. PERS, as the sole environmental management standard for seaports, offers a framework for ports to navigate legislation, foster sustainable practices, safeguard the environment, promote public health, and address climate challenges, in line with guidelines provided by the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO).
