The Port of Klaipeda achieved a historic milestone with its inaugural ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation. On April 9, the LNG tanker Avenir Aspiration successfully bunkered 326 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas to the 170-meter CMA CGM container vessel Containerships Aurora, showcasing the port’s dedication to sustainable maritime services. CMA CGM, which currently operates three LNG-powered vessels in the Baltic Sea, plans to expand its LNG-powered fleet to six in the near future, further solidifying Klaipeda’s position as a key player in green shipping initiatives.
This groundbreaking operation not only signifies a shift towards cleaner fuels but also underscores the collective commitment to sustainability and innovation within the shipping industry. LNG’s ability to drastically reduce emissions aligns with Klaipeda Port’s vision to offer a wider array of alternative green fuels, including green hydrogen production and bunkering slated to commence in early 2026. Avenir LNG, a leading small-scale LNG supplier, played a pivotal role in facilitating this milestone, leveraging its extensive fleet and expertise to secure energy supplies for vessels and terminals across the Baltic Sea region, including Sweden, Lithuania, and Finland.
As Lithuania’s premier transport hub, Klaipeda Port serves as a vital gateway for over 6,000 ships annually across 33 specialized terminals. Handling various cargo types and accommodating half a million passengers yearly, the port’s commitment to sustainability not only enhances environmental stewardship but also reinforces its status as a dynamic and forward-thinking maritime hub.
