On March 18th, the Port of Argentia in Canada and the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) in Germany entered into a Letter of Intent (LOI) aimed at enhancing cooperation in the export and import of green hydrogen between the two countries. The agreement was signed by CEOs Scott Penney of the Port of Argentia and Jens Meier of HPA during the Canada-Germany Hydrogen and Ammonia Producer-Offtaker Conference held in Hamburg.

This collaboration aligns with the Canada-Germany Energy Partnership and Hydrogen Alliance, which emphasizes joint efforts to reduce emissions and transition towards cleaner fuels and a greener economy. By signing the LOI, both ports demonstrate their commitment to supporting their governments’ mandates and the establishment of the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance.

Under the LOI, the Port of Argentia and Hamburg Port Authority will work together to develop a robust supply chain for green hydrogen derivatives, fostering the production, distribution, and application of environmentally friendly hydrogen products. Notably, the Port of Argentia’s partnership with Pattern Energy for the Argentia Renewables project, a 300-MW wind energy to green hydrogen production initiative, will play a pivotal role in shaping this collaboration, as the LOI sets the framework for joint efforts in facilitating green hydrogen initiatives between the two ports.
