Yusen Logistics (UK) and SEGRO, major players in the logistics and warehouse development sectors, are spearheading innovation with their collaborative warehouse project at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton. Anticipated as Yusen Logistics’ largest new build venture, the groundbreaking ceremony is slated for early 2024, with full operational capabilities expected by summer 2025. With a substantial £280m investment, the 1,191,000 sq ft facility aims to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, committing to carbon neutrality during construction and an annual reduction of 418 tCO2e in scope 1 and 498 tCO2e in scope 2.
The facility’s design incorporates key initiatives aligned with Yusen Logistics’ net-zero goals. A rooftop solar array is set to generate approximately 1,850 MWh in the first year, enabling surplus energy export to the National Grid. Yusen Logistics, already committed to green energy through their Zero Carbon program, will leverage the solar array to further contribute to sustainable energy practices. The strategic location, connected to the M1 and public transportation, ensures convenience, while amenities such as green spaces, expanded bicycle storage, and 220 Electric Vehicle charging stations, including their all-electric company car fleet, enhance the workplace environment.
Adjacent to SEGRO’s Strategic Rail Freight Terminal, the facility integrates seamlessly with rail freight solutions, offering CO2 savings on inbound transport. The site encompasses 220 truck parking spaces with Electric Truck charging, 70 loading docks, and 6 level access doors. A comprehensive temperature management system supports chilled storage for healthcare compliance, including MHRA and GDP standards, as well as ambient multiuser storage. Sustainable investments, such as automated pick, pack, and eco-friendly packing solutions, underscore Yusen Logistics’ commitment to meeting both operational and environmental objectives.
