A new initiative has been launched at the Freeport of Riga, introducing a regular container train, often referred to as a “shuttle train,” connecting the “Rīgas universālais terminālis” (RUT) and the “Baltic Container Terminal” (BCT). This development aims to enhance the efficiency and safety of container delivery to vessels at these terminals. The implementation of this train service not only enhances freight movement within the port but also alleviates pressure on terminal infrastructure, port motorways, and city streets by reducing reliance on road transport. This shift is particularly beneficial for neighboring communities and residents of Riga.

The transportation services are facilitated through a collaboration between “Baltijas Ekspresis,” the largest private rail freight carrier in the Baltics, and port companies Jaunzeltiņi, RUT, and BCT. Prior to this initiative, container transport between terminals relied solely on roads, contributing to congestion and infrastructure strain. The introduction of the “shuttle train” project marks a significant milestone for the Port of Riga, providing an alternative to road transport and connecting the port’s two major terminals. This regular train service offers a reliable solution for port clients, including freight forwarders, container owners, and shipping lines, enabling them to deliver consignments promptly, conveniently, and reliably to vessels at the port terminals.

Moreover, the establishment of a consistent flow of containers between the terminals promises to reduce truck traffic, congestion, and CO2 emissions. This positive impact will be felt by residents using Ganibu Dambis in their daily routines or residing near Vecmilgravis, further emphasizing the significance of this innovative transportation solution for the city of Riga.
