Freightliner, the UK rail freight subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming, has entered a five-year partnership agreement with The Malcolm Group, emphasizing their commitment to a long-term collaboration. The newly established intermodal service, now in its first month, connects Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal to the Grangemouth rail freight terminal in Central Scotland. Operating seven days a week, the service includes two overnight runs and facilitates the transportation of up to 36 platforms of domestic goods in both directions.
The Malcolm Group, specialists in logistics and construction services in Scotland, has been a family-owned business for over 90 years. While their involvement in rail freight operations is a more recent development, the past two decades have seen significant growth, with collaborations with Freightliner being a notable aspect. The strategic partnership with Freightliner enhances connectivity between Scotland’s Central Belt and the Midlands of England, often referred to as the Golden Triangle for distribution operations. Leveraging Freightliner’s lighter wagons, the collaboration enables a substantial 25% increase in transported goods volume. Recent upgrades at the Grangemouth terminal allow it to handle longer trains, fostering a two-way flow that appeals to customers in both Scotland and England.
