The ‘Ernst Kramer,’ measuring 104.97 meters in length, 9.50 meters in width, with a maximum draught of 3.15 meters, and a cargo capacity of 2,273,645 tonnes, underwent significant modifications to enable remote control of essential components. These included the main engine, rudder, bow thruster, radio, and radar equipment, all operated through radio waves from a distance. After initial trial operations in July, Rhenus showcased the innovative project at the 13th National Maritime Conference, a pivotal event organized by the German government to bolster the maritime industry.
At the conference, visitors witnessed the potential of remote-controlled inland waterway shipping at the FernBin stand. Skippers Bernhard Buche and Herbert Berger navigated the ‘Ernst Kramer’ from the operator’s stand at the Bremen Trade Fair Centre, showcasing its remote-controlled capabilities. The live link allowed spectators to observe the vessel’s movements in the Port of Duisburg and the Ruhr estuary, all controlled remotely. The prototype not only stands as a technical marvel but also promises substantial advantages for the entire maritime profession in the future.
