Testing took place over two months on routes including York to Manchester Airport and Leeds to Liverpool Lime Street.
Angel Trains, Hitachi Rail, and TransPennine Express have successfully completed the UK’s first intercity battery train trial in the North of England. The trial demonstrated significant fuel cost savings and the potential for zero-emission operation in and out of stations.
During the testing period, the battery-powered train achieved fuel cost savings between 35% and 50%, surpassing initial predictions. Operating at speeds exceeding 120 km/h on battery power alone, the train was able to enter and exit stations without emitting emissions, improving air quality and reducing noise pollution in non-electrified areas.
The battery system matches the weight and installation space of a traditional diesel engine, requiring no modifications to the train’s undercarriage or passenger areas. In one test run, the train operated solely on battery power for 70 km, demonstrating the feasibility of covering significant non-electrified route sections without relying on diesel engines.
Hitachi Rail is prepared to advance to the next stage of developing a full intercity battery-electric train, with an expected range of 100 to 150 km on battery power alone. The company has invested £17 million (EUR 20 million) in UK battery technology, expanding the supply chain in the North East and collaborating with local partners.
Ongoing work with Innovate UK and the University of Birmingham aims to develop next-generation battery technology. Hitachi Rail plans to apply this technology to other trains and large vehicles globally, potentially creating export opportunities for the UK’s battery sector.
The successful trial indicates a viable pathway to reduce emissions on existing diesel fleets by retrofitting battery technology. Discussions with the government and the rail industry are underway to determine the next steps for implementing this technology across the network.
