Despite challenges in Norwegian freight rail and rail infrastructure, CargoNet, the incumbent operators, adds more services for its customers.
Additional trains introduced on Arctic Rail Express line.
CargoNet will run two new direct freight trains per week on its Arctic Rail Express (ARE) service between Oslo and Narvik. Starting Sunday, 14 September 2025, the new commuter trains will increase overall capacity on the corridor. The additional services are aimed at addressing freight congestion and supporting transport continuity between southern and northern Norway.
Full five-day service returns on Oslo–Bergen route.
As of 1 September 2025, CargoNet resumed full operational capacity between Alnabru and Bergen. This follows the usual summer schedule reduction. On the same date, a fifth weekly train was added in each direction on Fridays. The corridor now runs four daily trains each way from Monday to Friday.
Frequency increased between Oslo and Trondheim.
CargoNet also expanded its freight offering between Oslo and Trondheim/Heimdal, effective 25 August 2025. The increase responds to customer requests for more frequent rail options along this central corridor. Specific details of the frequency adjustment have not been disclosed.
Surge in demand after BLS Rail AS exit.
CargoNet has also reported growing customer interest following the bankruptcy of BLS Rail AS. The company is reviewing its route structure to accommodate rising volumes. It attributes the trend not only to market shifts triggered by the BLS collapse, but also to steadier rail infrastructure performance and heightened environmental considerations among shippers.
