Construction of a new ICE depot has begun in Dortmund, costing over 400 million euros. The complex will be located on the site of a former freight station and will provide jobs for 500 employees. Completion is scheduled for 2027.
The new depot will handle up to 17 trains per day, including ICE 4, ICE 3 and ICE 3neo express trains. The site will include a 480-metre-long hall with four tracks, washing and cleaning facilities for carriages, and a parking lot for trains. To achieve climate neutrality, a geothermal plant generating 5,000 MWh annually and an 8,500 m² solar power plant covering around 50% of the depot’s energy consumption are planned.
German long-distance transport operator DB Fernverkehr plans to increase its ICE fleet from 410 to 450 units by 2030. The new depot in Dortmund will be the company’s 11th facility, supporting the growing need for servicing modern rolling stock.
