DB modernizes the Rhine Valley Railway

Deutsche Bahn (DB) marked a significant milestone in its Rhine Valley Railway upgrade project, enhancing freight transport efficiency along the Karlsruhe-Basel route. The newly inaugurated freight tracks at the Weil am Rhein border crossing, operational as of April 29, 2024, signify a vital development in Europe’s Rhine-Alpine Corridor rail infrastructure.

This upgrade includes the installation of six new tracks, two dedicated to through freight traffic and four facilitating customs procedures, locomotive changes, and crew shifts. Spanning approximately twelve kilometers, the project also involved the refurbishment of a rail bridge and the construction of noise barriers, totaling 780 meters, to mitigate disturbances for local residents.

To ensure minimal disruption to rail services, the Basel node enhancements are being executed in phased stages, with completed segments gradually integrated into operations. Moreover, DB’s ongoing conversion of Weil am Rhein station into a passenger and through traffic hub underscores its commitment to optimizing rail operations in the Haltingen-Weil am Rhein-Basel border region.
