DHL Global Forwarding has officially opened its new air terminal in Frankfurt am Main, one of the company’s largest logistics facilities in Europe. The new hub, with an area of 24,500 m², is located on a 55,000 m² site in CargoCity Süd and was built by developer Fraport AG. The terminal is equipped with 54 cross-docking gates and is capable of handling up to 300,000 tons of cargo per year. This will allow DHL to consolidate all of its current capacities in Frankfurt in one location, reduce the number of trucks on site and increase the efficiency of its logistics operations.
In addition to the main cargo complex, the site also includes 3,000 m² of modern office and social space. It is now also home to the headquarters of StarBroker, DHL Global Forwarding’s own air operator, responsible for booking and coordinating air transportation. The new facility offers customers a full range of services under one roof: from consolidation and customs clearance to organizing charter flights and further transportation by land. The latest ULD container handling technologies are used to improve the quality of service.
The building was constructed in compliance with the latest environmental standards: a 2 MW solar power plant was installed, 25 parking spaces for trucks and 185 for passenger cars were equipped, including 20 charging stations for electric vehicles. As Fraport emphasized, the new hub has become an important part of the Master Plan Cargohub strategy, aimed at increasing cargo transportation volumes in Frankfurt to 3 million tons by 2040.
