The Steering Committee of the FIN-EST Green Corridor Initiative has taken an important step in promoting carbon-neutral maritime transport in the Gulf of Finland by approving a list of 19 joint projects aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of ferry services between Finland and Estonia. The initiative was created following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in October 2023 between Helsinki, Tallinn and key stakeholders, which formed the basis for the creation of a climate-neutral route and a maritime green corridor between Helsinki and Tallinn, as well as Vuosaari and Muuga.

The main partners of the initiative are the cities and ports of Helsinki and Tallinn, Rederi AB Eckerö, Tallink Grupp, Viking Line and the Estonian Ministry of Climate, with the support of the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications. These organisations are working together to implement projects aimed at increasing sustainability, improving competitiveness and increasing passenger and cargo flows between the two countries.

The 19 projects cover a wide range of initiatives to achieve carbon neutrality, including switching to green fuels, making port infrastructure zero-emission, improving waste management, introducing digital solutions to improve fuel efficiency and using carbon capture technologies. All of these projects will contribute to the sustainable development of ferry transport between Finland and Estonia and make it more environmentally friendly.
