In 2024, Girteka aims to increase the volume of goods transported by rail, covering the main European markets, by offering an expanded service.
Girteka has been a provider of intermodal services for more than seven years. Now the company wants to become even more involved in the development of the intermodal rail network and combine this with the possibility of using alternative fuel HVO on the routes to and from the terminals.
Intermodal transport is one of the most environmentally friendly methods of long-distance freight transport. In comparison to road transport, it can have a CO2 emission reduction of up to 90%. In 2023, Girteka reduced CO2 emissions by more than 17 million kg. This was achieved by using rail transport for deliveries over a total distance of more than 17 million km. In 2024, Girteka increased the volume of goods transported by rail by developing its intermodal service offering.
“We continue to work on improving our intermodal rail services and attracting customers who previously perceived this mode of transport as unconventional or less reliable,“ said Larisa Senkevičienė, Intermodal Business Development Manager at Girteka.
Girteka has been expanding its intermodal network in Western Europe. It focuses mainly on electrified routes. Combining rail and road transport based on HVO alternative fuel vehicles is one of the solutions Girteka uses.
In collaboration with rail partners, Girteka currently operates intermodal deliveries on 7 main routes. They cover the main European markets (via, from/to) with major intermodal terminals in Germany (Kaldenkirchen, Düsseldorf), Sweden (Nassjo/Katrineholm), Poland (Poznań), Luxembourg (Bettembourg), Austria (Vienna), Italy (Domodossola, Bari) and France (Le Boulou, Calais). All types of goods are transported by rail. These include temperature-controlled foodstuffs, and high-value and special goods that require special handling and monitoring.
