The hull of the 130-metre 096 Incat, the world’s largest battery-powered catamaran, has been launched at the Incat shipyard in Hobart, Tasmania. The ferry is being built for South American operator Buquebus and is the largest project in the Australian shipbuilder’s history.
The all-electric vessel will operate between Buenos Aires and Uruguay, carrying up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles across the La Plata River. It will be powered by more than 250 tonnes of batteries and a storage system with a capacity of over 40 megawatt hours.
This is the ninth ferry built by Incat for Buquebus. Interior fitting out is currently underway, with battery installation and energy systems integration planned for the final stage before sea trials in late 2025.
