JSC NC Kazakhstan Temir Zholy and the American company Wabtec signed an agreement for the supply of new TE33AT series locomotives, whose production will be localized in Astana at the Lokomotiv Kurastyru Zauyty plant. The total contract value reached USD 4.2 billion, making this the largest deal in the history of locomotive manufacturing in Kazakhstan.
As part of the cooperation, service agreements for the maintenance of new and existing locomotives were signed, ensuring the reliability of KTZ’s fleet and optimizing operating costs. The company’s service centers are located in Sekseul, Ayagoz, Makat, Aktobe, Astana, Shalkar, and Almaty, guaranteeing stable jobs in the regions.
The new locomotives are characterized by high power, energy efficiency, and resistance to Kazakhstan’s climatic conditions. The fleet upgrade will reduce locomotive wear and tear from ~49% to 32% by 2030 and improve traction availability as freight turnover grows. The partnership between KTZ and Wabtec, which began in the early 2000s, has become a key driver of rail industry modernization and strengthened Kazakhstan’s position in the Eurasian transport technology market.
