Latvijas dzelzceļš is upgrading the Tornakalns–Imanta section to launch a railway connection with Riga Airport.

The Latvian State Railways SJSC “Latvijas dzelzceļš” has announced a tender for the design and construction of modernized infrastructure on the Torņakalns–Imanta section. This is the first stage of the implementation of the broad gauge (1520 mm) line connecting Riga Central Station with RIX International Airport. The work includes updating the contact network, signaling systems and building new passenger platforms with comfortable and accessible infrastructure.

The project is being implemented within the framework of the “RIX–RCS–Ogre” and “Modernization of Passenger Rail Infrastructure” programs, aimed at improving the mobility of the Latvian population and integrating regional routes. Thanks to the new line, passengers from the regions of Latvia, as well as Lithuania and Estonia, will be able to reach the airport with one transfer.

The modernization will affect the Torņakalns and Zasulauks stations, the Imanta and Depot stops, and if funding is available, a new “Agenskalns” platform will be built. The project is financed by the EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021–2027. LDz is expected to announce new tenders in 2025, including for the Janjavarti–Ogre section and infrastructure on the Imanta–RIX section.
