Maersk has christened its new methanol-capable, dual-fuel container ship, the Alexandra Maersk, at a ceremony in the Port of Felixstowe, UK, attended by UK Maritime Minister Mike Cain, IMO officials, and Maersk customers and employees. Elaine Condon, Primark’s Director of People and Culture, served as the vessel’s godmother, highlighting Maersk’s strong partnership with the retailer.

The Alexandra Maersk is the sixth vessel in Maersk’s own fleet to be equipped with methanol engines. It is the fifth of 18 large dual-fuel vessels Maersk plans to receive in 2024-25. Each vessel is designed to carry more than 16,000 TEUs. The vessels are key to Maersk’s plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using sustainable fuels such as green methanol.
Named after Alexandra Maersk-Møller, sister of the company’s founder A.P. Møller, the new vessel underlines the company’s commitment to tradition and environmental sustainability. Maersk is actively developing the use of methanol, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65-90% compared to conventional fuels.
