Maersk, a leading player in the shipping industry, marks a milestone as the “Ane Maersk”, the world’s first large methanol-capable container ship, docks at Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg on its inaugural voyage from Asia to Europe. Embracing sustainability, Maersk pioneers the use of green fuel methanol to power its vessels, symbolizing a shift towards climate-conscious maritime practices. Axel Mattern, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing, acknowledges the significance of “Ane Maersk’s” arrival, highlighting both the maritime sector’s strides towards carbon neutrality and the Port of Hamburg’s commitment to sustainability.

Featuring innovative ship design, the “Ane Maersk” boasts bridge superstructures at the bow to accommodate larger fuel tanks required for methanol propulsion. While methanol offers environmental benefits by emitting fewer greenhouse gases than conventional fuels, its lower energy content necessitates larger fuel volumes. Nonetheless, Maersk looks to the future, with plans for synthetically produced e-methanol, which could further reduce emissions by over 90%. Amidst limited availability of green methanol, Maersk’s vessels maintain versatility through dual-fuel technology, enabling operation on biodiesel or fossil ultra-low sulphur oil.

Scheduled on Maersk’s Asia-Europe liner service (AE-7), the “Ane Maersk” navigates a route spanning 14 ports, encompassing strategic locations from Ningbo to Jebel Ali (Dubai).
