The fleet of the Swiss shipping giant MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) has reached a historic milestone — the company now operates 900 container ships. Of these, 609 are its own vessels, and the remaining 292 are chartered.
MSC is not going to stop there: the carrier has another 132 ships in its order book. Taking this into account, the company’s fleet may exceed 1,000 container ships in the coming years. Currently, the total capacity of the MSC fleet is 6.47 million TEU — almost a million more than Maersk, which MSC overtook in 2022, taking the leading position in the world container line ranking.
As of today, MSC’s market share is 20.3%. In the last week alone, the company has acquired three new vessels: two 8,000 TEU container ships from Northern Shipping Holding and one 1,600 TEU vessel from Welton Shipping. In total, since 2020, MSC has added 444 container ships with a total capacity of 1.72 million TEU to its fleet.
