Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) presented the new Cityjet double-decker electric train for suburban and regional services in St. Pölten. The train was developed by Stadler on the KISS platform and was presented at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin in September 2024.
The Cityjet double-decker trains are available in six or four-car versions with 591 or 371 seats. They are equipped with modern comfort features, including air conditioning, barrier-free access, a USB socket, Wi-Fi and a video surveillance system. The train also has areas for 60 bicycles in the six-car version, and the maximum speed is 160 km/h.
ÖBB is actively updating its rolling stock due to the growing volume of passenger traffic. In particular, for transportation in the eastern region of Austria, the company has ordered 109 Cityjet double-decker trains for around 1.5 billion euros. The total investment in the renewal of the squad by 2030 will amount to 6.1 billion euros.
