The Ministry of Energy and Minerals of the Sultanate has joined forces with Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom), Port of Amsterdam, Zenith Energy Terminals, and GasLog, signing a pivotal Joint Study Agreement (JSA) during COP28 in Dubai. This collaboration aims to pioneer the world’s inaugural commercial-scale liquid hydrogen corridor, focusing on green hydrogen produced in Oman. The signing ceremony, witnessed by His Excellency Minister Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi and the Climate Envoy of the Netherlands, Prince Jaime de Bourbon de Parme, underscores the shared commitment to advancing sustainable energy.
The JSA outlines a comprehensive examination of the prerequisites for establishing an open-access hydrogen liquefaction, storage, and export facility in Oman. GasLog is concurrently developing specialized vessels for liquid hydrogen transportation. The primary objective is to create a green hydrogen corridor between Oman and the Netherlands, with Zenith Energy’s terminal serving as the hub for import, regasification, and distribution to local off-takers in the Amsterdam port and major industries in the European hinterland. The open-access liquefaction facility will not only facilitate cost-effective hydrogen export corridors to global markets but also align with Oman’s Vision 2040, focusing on economic diversification and achieving Net-Zero by 2050.
In pursuit of Oman’s hydrogen strategy, leveraging abundant natural resources and strategic geographical positioning, Hydrom spearheads the Omani hydrogen sector’s overall development. With a focus on unlocking the potential of liquid hydrogen, the open-access liquefaction facility emerges as a key enabler, providing a viable vector for individual projects to explore export opportunities and contribute to the country’s sustainable energy vision.
