The Container Exchange Route (CER) on the Maasvlakte has officially commenced operations after an extensive preliminary phase, marking a significant milestone in enhancing the container infrastructure at the Port of Rotterdam. The 17-kilometre-long closed road network interconnects key container terminals, including Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG), Hutchison Ports ECT Rotterdam’s Delta terminal, and QTerminals Kramer Rotterdam’s terminals and depots. This innovative system facilitates diverse forms of transport, such as Multi Trailer Systems (MTS), Terminal Tractor Units with chassis (TT), and conventional trucks, utilized by affiliated parties through various carriers.
Boudewijn Siemons, the interim CEO and COO of Port of Rotterdam Authority, expressed his satisfaction with the commissioning of the Container Exchange Route. The Port Authority’s objective is to fortify Rotterdam’s position as a container hub by ensuring the safe, efficient, and sustainable processing of increasing container volumes. The CER, encompassing 17 kilometers of paved road, multiple junctions, rail crossings, and essential infrastructure components, represents a unique collaborative effort among the Port Authority, affiliated parties, and carriers, distinguishing it from similar systems in other ports.
Functioning as a ‘closed’ transport route, the CER is exclusively accessible to transport companies with an Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) permit from Customs. This aligns with Customs authorities’ goals to combat the drug trade and subversion in the port, enhancing security and integrity in the logistics chain. As the initial parties commence CER usage, future expansions are anticipated, connecting additional terminals, depots, and distribution centers. The Port Authority’s aim is to broaden CER access for as many container companies as possible, fostering increased connectivity, accessibility, and the overall efficiency of container transport within the port.
