Rail Baltica and other EU megaprojects: improving Europe’s transport network.

Rail Baltica, Europe’s largest railway project connecting Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to the European rail network, is one of six key megaprojects of the EU transport network. Other major projects include the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel between Germany and Denmark, and the Brenner Base Tunnel linking Austria and Italy across the Alps.

These projects aim to improve mobility, freight transport and safety across Europe. Construction of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel began in 2020 and is scheduled for completion in 2029. The Brenner Base Tunnel, at 64 kilometres long, will be the longest railway tunnel in the world and is scheduled for completion by 2032.

Rail Baltica will involve the construction of almost 900 kilometres of new track, including challenging river and marsh crossings. The project aims to improve regional integration and military mobility, as well as achieve the EU’s strategic objectives.
