Rail Baltica’s updated plan for the Kaunas-Vilnius section is open for discussion.

The plan for the Kaunas-Vilnius section of the Rail Baltica railway line aims to meet the needs of the communities and municipalities affected by the future railway. By analyzing 215 public proposals, the planning team has incorporated 109 suggestions and partially considered 45 others. Adjustments include additional two-level crossings, improved access to land plots, and modifications to the railway line at Rykantai, as noted by Vytis Žalimas, CEO of LTG Infra.

The new railway line will span 95 km from Vilnius through Paneriai, Lentvaris, and north of Vievis to Kaunas, with a total length of 156 km including additional links. This line will connect Vilnius and Kaunas airports, the Vilnius Intermodal Terminal, and regional stations in Lentvaris, Vievis, and Kaišiadorys. Upon completion, the journey between Vilnius and Kaunas will take approximately 38 minutes. The northern S5 route was selected as the optimal alternative in 2021, and the plan is being developed by Sweco Lietuva UAB and DB Engineering & Consulting GmbH. Rail Baltica, the largest railway infrastructure project in the Baltic States, will establish an electrified European-standard railway connecting major cities across the region.
