Rhenus Group releases ITCPRO level sensor source code

The Rhenus Group has taken a significant step towards environmental responsibility by releasing the source code of its ITCPRO level sensor for free, enabling other companies to reduce their carbon footprint. Developed in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) Enterprise Lab in 2019, the sensor, known for turning recycling containers into “smart data drums,” utilizes a time-of-flight sensor to determine filling levels. This innovation not only minimizes the risk of data container overflow but also eliminates unnecessary pick-up journeys, contributing to efficient waste management.

Since its introduction in 2020, the ITCPRO level sensor has played a crucial role in secure and GDPR-compliant disposal of files and documents. The sensor’s ability to recognize filling levels, send alerts upon reaching predefined thresholds, and automate the pick-up process ensures containers are not picked up prematurely or allowed to overflow. In a move towards transparency and collaboration, Rhenus is now sharing the sensor’s source code through the Open Logistics Foundation repository, while the Fraunhofer IML is providing reference implementation information for compatible hardware. This initiative, supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure under the Silicon Economy Project, reflects a commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in waste management practices.
