China has completed construction of a unique transport network of tunnels and bridges connecting Shenzhen and Zhongshan across the mouth of the Pearl River. The seven-year project involves two artificial islands connected by an underwater tunnel and bridges, with a total route length of 24 kilometers.

This ambitious project set 10 world records, including the longest span of a marine suspension bridge (1,666 meters) and the highest navigation clearance. Records were also achieved for wind test speed (83.7 meters per second) and asphalt deck area (378,800 square meters). The underwater tunnel, 5035 meters long and 55.6 meters wide, became the longest and widest in the world.

Particular attention is paid to safety. The tunnel is equipped with innovative fire extinguishing and smoke removal systems, and is also patrolled by 14 robots that monitor the condition of pipes and cables and detect accidents. A color lighting system is installed along the walls of the tunnel, which changes color depending on the situation, helping to navigate during evacuation.
