Swiss underground freight rail project CST advances to audition phase

The Cargo Sous Terrain (CST) project, a Swiss initiative for an underground freight-dedicated rail network, is advancing into a new phase with the commencement of an audition period. The Swiss Federal Offices of Transport and Territorial Development have initiated this period, inviting involved parties to submit their perspectives on the project. Commencing on February 1, the Swiss cantons through which CST’s initial section is planned, namely Bern, Solothurn, Aargau, and Zürich, have the opportunity to voice their opinions. The auditions, organized by the cantons, will involve towns and the public and are scheduled to begin on March 1, continuing until mid-March.

Initially launched in 2013, the project gained significant momentum in the summer of 2022 when the Swiss Federal Council approved legislation supporting underground goods transportation. CST envisions creating an underground rail network facilitating the transportation of single wagons, each carrying two EUR pallets at a speed of 30 km/h. The network is designed to connect to various logistics hubs whose locations will be determined by the respective cantons. CST indicates that operational activities could potentially commence in 2031, following the completion of the first drilling tests conducted a year ago to study the subsoil between Härkingen and Zürich.
