The modernization of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route has increased its capacity fivefold.

At a meeting organized by the branch of JSC NC KTZ – Integrated Planning Directorate together with representatives of the Azerbaijan Railways, the modernization of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route was presented. After the upgrade, the capacity of the route increased fivefold – from one to five million tons of cargo per year, the electrification and reconstruction of the Akhalkalaki station was completed.

This project, implemented at the initiative of Azerbaijan, is aimed at increasing transit and reducing the cost of cargo transportation along the Middle Corridor. The modernized route will speed up the delivery of goods between Asia and Europe, bypassing the ports of the Black Sea, and will become more economical compared to sea and road transportation.

By the end of the year, it is planned to launch a joint venture with the participation of Georgia and Azerbaijan to develop a tariff policy and transportation conditions. Kazakhstani shippers and industry associations will continue to exchange information and meet, since transportation between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan increased by 37% in the first seven months of this year, reaching 3.2 million tons.
