The Port of Antwerp-Bruges and Infrabel are moving from a railway strategy to practical results.

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges, together with infrastructure operator Infrabel, is implementing a phased rail strategy aimed at developing sustainable port logistics. Electrification of the port’s rail network remains a key priority. In 2025, electrification of the line toward Oorderen was completed, and work on Line 11, leading to Combinant and BASF production facilities, is planned for 2026. This should increase capacity and reduce the carbon footprint of rail transport within the port.

In parallel with infrastructure development, the port is actively investing in digitalization. Together with Infrabel, the port developed the Rail Trans Port Manager digital platform, providing market participants with real-time access to train and wagon movements at all stages of travel within and outside the port. The system enables the prompt monitoring of schedule deviations, control of train composition, and forecasting of arrival times at terminals. This already helps Infrabel manage capacity more efficiently, terminals plan track and personnel loads, and rail companies optimize operations at the Antwerp-North marshalling yard.

Rail Trans Port Manager will be open to all participants in the rail logistics chain—from infrastructure and terminal operators to freight forwarders and port services—while strictly adhering to security and data privacy requirements. The platform’s functionality is planned to expand in the future, including international monitoring of port rail traffic, improved track management, and more accurate terminal slot planning. The project is also part of the PIONEERS initiative under the Horizon 2020 program and aims to implement practical solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in European ports.
