For the first time, a wide range of stakeholders, including the Port of Rotterdam Authority, presented joint agreements on the strategic development of the port. They concern key areas – the transition to sustainable energy sources, improving transport accessibility, building housing, reducing noise pollution and integrating the port into the environment. The initiative is being implemented within the framework of the national NOVEX program and is aimed at creating a sustainable, economically strong and comfortable region for living.
The implementation plan includes a study of the possible expansion of the port, the development of hydrogen infrastructure, providing ships with shore power by 2028 and overcoming obstacles related to nitrogen emissions and waste disposal standards. It is also planned to develop a plan for the restoration of nature in Natura 2000 areas and agree on solutions for the construction of new housing necessary to attract specialists to the port sector.
The next step will be the formation of an investment agenda and the linking of financial resources to goals and projects. The partnership was joined by government ministries, the province of South Holland, the city of Rotterdam, neighbouring municipalities and environmental organisations, highlighting the unique scale of inter-ministerial cooperation in the development of Europe’s largest port.
