Jiangnan Shipyard in China unveiled the world’s largest nuclear-powered container ship during the Marintec China 2023 trade fair in Shanghai. Boasting a 24,000 TEU capacity, the vessel incorporates cutting-edge molten salt reactors to enhance safety and efficiency. The dual-motor propulsion system, featuring propellers and rudders, is primarily powered by a supercritical carbon dioxide generator. The innovative modular nuclear power system not only ensures high efficiency but also achieves net-zero emissions, offering a more compact, spacious, and energy-efficient alternative compared to traditional ships. This groundbreaking design has received preliminary approval from DNV, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry’s quest for near-zero emission solutions.
