According to company head Talgat Aldybergenov, interest among Chinese shippers in land-based routes has grown significantly due to their greater reliability and predictable delivery times compared to maritime transport. Another factor driving the redistribution of cargo flows has been instability along traditional transport corridors, which has reinforced Kazakhstan’s role as a key transit hub within the Eurasian region.

One of the primary routes remains the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, the importance of which has increased substantially since 2022. In response to this growing demand, KTZ is implementing a large-scale modernization program for its railway network. By 2030, infrastructure investments are projected to reach $10 billion, with approximately half of this amount already utilized. This year alone, the company is constructing 900 kilometers of new railway lines, including the 300-kilometer Ayagoz–Bakhty section, which will establish a third railway crossing between Kazakhstan and China. Upon the completion of these projects, the throughput capacity along the Kazakhstan–China corridor is expected to rise from the current 55 million tons to 100 million tons of cargo per year.

KTZ also plans to expand the capabilities of the Trans-Caspian Route. While approximately 173 container trains traveled along the corridor during the first quarter, the company expects to raise this figure to 600 trains by year-end, and to increase it by nearly another two-thirds the following year. To support these growing traffic volumes, the operator intends to acquire hundreds of locomotives, six cargo vessels for operations on the Caspian Sea, and a cargo aircraft, as well as to expand its logistics facilities at ports in China and Europe.

Kazakhstan’s national railway operator, KTZ, is accelerating the implementation of infrastructure projects to boost transit traffic between China and Europe.
